Common Uses
- prevent a rope from slipping through a hole or device.
- add a stopper to the end of a sailing or climbing rope.
- keep a rope from running out of a pulley or block.
- tie a quick, easy-to-untie stopper at the end of any rope.
- tie a temporary stopper knot that is easy to remove later.

Strength/Reliability
Unlike the Overhand Knot, which will jam under strain often requiring the rope to be cut, the Figure Eight can be easily untied after even the greatest strain.
