Usage

The Figure Eight is a general-purpose stopper knot that replaces the common Overhand Knot in many uses. The Figure Eight Knot is very important in both sailing and rock climbing as a method of stopping ropes from running out of retaining devices.

Common Uses

  • prevent a rope from slipping through a hole or device.
  • add a stopper to the end of a sailing or climbing rope.
  • keep a rope from running out of a pulley or block.
  • tie a quick, easy-to-untie stopper at the end of any rope.
  • tie a temporary stopper knot that is easy to remove later.

Strength/Reliability

Unlike the Overhand Knot, which will jam under strain often requiring the rope to be cut, the Figure Eight can be easily untied after even the greatest strain.
