Figure Nine Loop
( Figure-of-Nine Loop | Figure 9 )
Usage
The Figure-of-Nine Loop forms a fixed loop in a rope. It is sometimes used instead of a Figure-of-Eight Loop to attach a rope to an anchor point or belay. The knot is particularly popular amongst cavers.
Common Uses
- create a stronger alternative to the figure eight loop that is unlikely to jam.
- form a fixed loop at the end of a rope for heavy loads.
- make a secure loop for climbing or rescue in thick rope.
- tie a strong anchor loop for caving or spelunking.
Warning ⚠️
Verify tying technique with a skilled instructor where knot failure could cause property damage, injury, or death.
Also known as
- Figure-of-Nine Loop
- Figure 9
Structure
Tied in the bight, the Figure-of-Nine Loop is made similarly to a Figure-of-Eight Loop but with an extra half-turn before finishing the knot.
Strength/Reliability
While it uses more rope and is bulkier than the Figure-of-Eight Loop, the Figure-of-Nine Loop is somewhat stronger and less likely to jam after heavy or prolonged loading.
